Summary: Federal IT professionals are now challenged with trying to make mobile devices secure. In addition to feature phones, we now have smart phones with several operating systems. Just to make things interesting, we now have iPads and competing tablet devices entering the marketplace. “Endpoint” security is the new term in order to be able control these devices.
John Bordwine has been involved in the world of federal security for decades. He has visited several agencies and has a good idea of what kind of security requirements are needed in a variety of federal agencies. During this interview, John discusses the concept of network access control and how it can apply to mobile devices. Symantec has a wide variety of offerings that include encryption as well as two factor authentication.
The challenge is matching the security requirements of your agency in the fast changing world of portable devices. In the middle of May 2011, Microsoft announced Windows 8 and then backed off that announcement. In late May, 2011, Microsoft then announced plans for a tablet using an operating system based on Windows8. This puts a federal IT profession scratching his head trying to put together a policy for security for emerging devices.
