Challenges of enterprise architecture with very large systems: the DoD

Department of Defense logo This week’s interview on Federal News Radio WFED 1500 AM  is with Dennis Wisnosky from the DoD.

Listen here: http://bit.ly/ccHiTg  (60 minutes)

Summary: Dennis Wisnowsky is in a quest for a standard way to organize data at the Department of Defense. You may have the image of “one ring to rule them all,” but that would not be accurate. Perhaps something like, “One standard way to describe volts, one standard say to describe a way to measure strength in concrete, or even, one standard way to exchange data.”

Dennis began his career writing article on arcane topics like linear stepper motors for printers. From that precise, focused start, he has progressively more and more responsibility into the way systems interact. What is amazing is that he still appreciates the details and how they should act in unison. In this interview, Dennis discusses common vocabulary and primitives, semantic information, as well as international standards.

The takeaway from this interview is that the Internet is evolving to the point where it can contain human readable as well as machine readable information. Why not take advantage of this transition and use automated ways to manage and structure data.

If you would like to pursue the topic of Enterprise Architecture at the DoD, you may want to read an entertaining PDF which includes Dennis and his dog ! http://stids.c4i.gmu.edu/presentations/STIDS_Keynote_Wisnosky.pdf
